Vintage !! Well I have to confess I have not always been a vintage girl, in my youth although I still loved creating I have made a variety of things, mainly from new materials.
Me, I had long forgotten the sewing and knitting I did when I was a young girl and I started again with jewellery using gem stones and progressed on to paper crafts and card making. Then I found my sewing machine and my love of sewing came right back. 
However I do think its a good thing for a creator to try different ways and means of using their creativity, you grow and there is less chance of your work becoming stale and in turn you becoming complacent. 
I find it strange how things progress and your inspiration is found in different things which in turn changes the way you look at things and the direction you go in.
​As I have hit my middle years, yes its true I am heading towards my later years now I think and vintage has become a bigger part of my life.
​You appreciate the work that has gone into things the older you get and the fact that unlike modern pieces the older vintage pieces last.
​One of the things that draws me towards vintage and antique is that it has history it is ok for whatever it is to show its age.
​I wonder, where did it come from, who owned it, why did it end up in a shop or at a collectors fair. I love the fact that its become part of our history now so its life continues on.

Of course there is also that thrill of finding something sad and forgotten and seeing it in new light making it into something different, the treasure hunting to find these things, and the new friends found along the way.
​One of the more positive reasons for us to repurpose or reclaim items is to help us as humanbeings save some of the resources which will and already are becoming scarce.
​So this vintage girl is doing her bit enjoying helping in just a small way, and enjoying the journey it takes her on............

So I pose a question when do you become a hoarder ? Some people who know me will already know I have a thing for vintage haberdashery especially lace and threads and it has become addictive I see old lace and I have to have it. I see vintage Sylko on a wooden bobbin and my eyes light up and I need it !!
​I think my recent count is up to 149 reels one of which is quite rare "Air Force Blue" and I have a reject one which has neither code or colour on it I am still trying to research that one.
​

So am I a hoarder or is it a collection, I might add that all of these threads and lace are used in projects but there is always a piece or a colour that I just can not bring myself to use up. I have become friends with fellow collectors of the Sylko bobbin and I am taking part in helping a lovely lady collect and photograph as many colours as she can. You can find her on Facebook as Agatha's Antics and she has recently published the book you see in the picture below, Sarah you are an inspiration when it comes to history. This has opened up a whole new world of ladies who have the same passion amazing what a little reel of thread can do isn't it. 

When I bought my last batch of reels that shop owner was almost as excited as me and happy they were going to someone who loved vintage haberdashery as much as she did.
​I also have a collection of Perivale silks delicate and beautiful colours which are a delight to use.
​I hope that this blog has made you think a little just about the history behind each reel who owned it, where did it come from. 

Maybe next time we need to talk about another collection buttons or more particularly Mother of Pearl Buttons.
